CHAPTER FIFTEEN

The second I was sure my team was ready and formed into squads again, I began to establish a portal. Everyone was in similar squads, each squad now bigger and instructed to wait two minutes between each, a little less time than before.

Our strategy had worked well enough that we were more than happy to use it again, especially as we had a better idea of what we’d be up against. We were simply going to implement it a bit faster.

We even intended to fight down to the same building. Partially to make sure the gryphons we’d given the vaccine to had made a full recovery, but partially to have a place to aim for that we could defend if needed. Once I’d assessed the situation, we’d then either push back to the portal and begin our build, or we would head to where we could find more allies.

Nevys knew there was a chance we would be gone longer this time and knew we’d set ourselves a more difficult task. We’d promised to try to check in when we could, however.

She’d confirmed that there hadn’t been any attacks on Havilah while we’d been gone the last time, but I couldn’t promise that would hold true if we were gone for more than twenty-four hours a second time. For now, it was a positive sign that we were taking the right risks.

To my surprise, the portal resisted my attempts to make it, beginning to feel like a brand new portal. There was a build-up of pressure in trying to get it to connect fully and establish.

“Everything okay?” Kryos asked from beside me, staring at the space where the portal should be. It was a different shade of shimmering gray from the usual, a reddish tint there.

“I’m not sure,” I replied, being as honest as I could. “It’s as if the connection to the planet has been broken. But it hasn’t. I could reach out to the place easily. I just can’t get it to lock on and make the run-through.”

“Sounds like there’s a busy signal and another portal already connected,” Douglas replied, shrugging as if he didn’t have confidence in his response but had said it anyway.

I could have smacked myself for not seeing it sooner. He was right. Another portal was already in the way on the planet. For a few seconds, I paused, not letting my attempt at a portal close but not forcing any more magic down the connection, either.

Another portal was likely to come from another corrupted planet within the sector, and that meant reinforcements would probably be arriving, something we didn’t want. Although I’d never had to do it, there was a way to break a portal connection in favor of another.

If this was going to work, I needed to figure out how to steal the connection, shut the other portal, and head through ourselves. Closing my eyes, I focused on the task, feeling with my mind and using magic to push through to the other portal.
